The fantastic staff at Reed Elsevier Singapore held a fundraising live and silent auction on the afternoon of Wednesday September 28 to raise funds to support ‘Room to Read’ (http://www.roomtoread.org). At a glance, Room to Read partners with local communities throughout the developing world to provide quality educational opportunities by establishing libraries, creating local language children’s literature, constructing schools, providing education to girls and establishing computer labs. This is particularly close to the employees’ hearts as they clearly grasp the importance of literacy and education.
Reed Elsevier Singapore set itself a challenging goal as it is aiming to raise enough funds to open a school in Laos (which costs USD $33,000). In order to do so, they are organizing several fund-raising events and one of the biggest was the auction held on the 28th.
It was a privilege to be asked to be a part of this fundraising and this company and their employees must be applauded for their corporate responsibility and desire to make a difference. The auctions were a overwhelming success both in the funds they raised (around $6000) and the camaraderie and fun that the team had together. Congratulations to all the organizers and those who donated prizes. I am sure this is just the first of what will become an amazing annual event!
As chairperson of the organising committee, I’d like to extend a sincere thank you to Rob for doing an outstanding job with our auction. We are absolutely convinced that without his help – we would never have raised as much as we did. He brought a sense of humour and excitement to the room that was not only contagious, but helped propel us to a success that far exceeded our wildest expectations.
